History & Origins of
Jagriti Yatra
Jagriti Yatra is set up under a non-profit charitable organisation, Jagriti Sewa Sansthan and is headquartered in Mumbai. Jagriti Sewa Sansthan is based in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh and focuses on skill-development.
In 1997, Jagriti Yatra’s chairman Shashank Mani organized the Azad Bharat Rail Yatra to mark 50 years of India’s independence. The journey was transformational. It led to the book ‘India, A Journey through a Healing Civilization‘ by Shashank Mani, which was published by Harper Collins in 2007.

First Jagriti Yatra
The book inspired the rebirth of the Yatra. Jagriti Yatra board members, Raj Krishnamurthy and Rewati Prabhu joined Shashank Mani in creating and launching the Jagriti Yatra, with an ambitious new agenda of Enterprise-led-development. Gitanjali Bhattacharya and Swapnil Dixit were the first executives of Jagriti Yatra.
Today, Jagriti Yatra continues to be supported by a variety of companies, trusts and individuals, including Dell, Google, Coca-Cola, and Cairn India.
Vision
The vision of Jagriti is ‘Building India Through Enterprise‘. It aims to inspire the young Indians living in the middle of the Indian demographic diamond to lead development by taking to enterprise, thus unleashing a movement of Enterprise-led-development.
Jagriti focuses on the seven verticals of development
- Agriculture
- Education
- Energy
- Healthcare
- Manufacturing
- Water & Sanitation
- Arts & Culture & Sports
Within this agenda, Jagriti is focused on the adaptation and replication of successful enterprise models across Middle India.
Mission
3 Horizons Approach
Jagriti’s vision is larger than its one or two elements. Broadly, it stands on 3 pillars:
- Jagriti Yatra (JY)
- Jagriti Enterprise Network (JEN)
- Jagriti Enterprise Center (JEC)
With Jagriti Yatra successfully running for past few years, Jagriti is now focusing on building Jagriti Enterprise Network, an ecosystem to support the young entrepreneurs from Middle India. Jagriti Enterprise Institute is a long-term plan which envisages to be a physical incubation centre for Middle India enterprises.
These three ultimately contribute to Jagriti’s overall vision of creating job creators in place of job seekers.
We, at Jagriti, recognize that ‘enterprise’ is not just about starting a venture. Rather, it is a way of working. Teachers, doctors, social workers, artists can all be enterprising in their efforts towards building India. Jagriti’s path to its entrepreneurial vision is encouraging and supporting sustainable, inclusive and ethical business models, especially those suited for Middle India.
